The action movie "The Walled City," which was released in May this year and caused a big sensation, and the timeless classic film "In the Mood for Love" by Wong Kar-wai in the 2000s are two completely different films, but both are based on novels and manga.[1]They have one thing in common: they are both based on the original work.
[1]"Kowloon Walled City" is based on Situ Jianqiao's cartoon adaptation of "Kowloon Walled City," a work published by Yu Er in 2008.
In Hong Kong film production, original authors are closely involved in the filmmaking process, working with directors to create new stories and scripts. Interdisciplinary collaboration between filmmakers and writers is a feature of Hong Kong's film culture. The Hong Kong Film Archive's "Portrait of the City: Hong Kong Film and Literature" focuses on original novelists and playwrights, showcasing how they have adapted their works into films and influenced the Hong Kong film industry.
This exhibition, which spans four zones, introduces films related to Hong Kong literature from the 1930s to this century, allowing visitors to experience the long-standing close relationship between Hong Kong film and literature, as well as the changes in the daily lives of Hong Kong people over the decades, through exhibitions, films, music and lyrics.

In conjunction with this exhibition, from December 2024, 12 to February 2025, 23, 17 Hong Kong films will be screened under the concept of "Dancing Between Words and Images – Hong Kong Films and Literature".
